Horse racing is one of the oldest sports still in existence today. Back in ancient Greece, Chariot racing was the spectacle to watch. But did you ever wonder what types of horse racing is practiced today and what breeds run best in each category? Today's blog will focus on just that.

Steeplechase

The first type is called Flat Racing. Flat racing is where horses gallop directly between two points around a straight or oval track. This is by far the most popular type of horse racing today and hosts all three Triple Crown Events. (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, & Belmont). Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Arabian Pain, and Appaloosa excel in flat tracks.

The second type is called Jump Racing. There are two sub-genres of this particular event called hurdling or Steeplechasing. The name varies according to the size and type of the obstacles. This is a race where horses navigate through various obstacles to a finish line. Overseas, this type of race is referred to as Nation Hunt Racing. Jump racing can be extremely dangerous as these half ton horses are moving fast while jumping over various heights. Thoroughbred & AQPS are tailored for jumping races

The Third Type is Endurance Racing. This is where horses travel over an extreme distance. This can range anywhere form 25 to 100 miles!

The forth type is harness racing. This is where a horse will pace or trot while puling a driver in a sulky. This is similar to the horse races of ancient times. Standardbred, Russian Trotter, and Finnhorse frequent this genre of racing.

My personal preference is Flat Racing followed by Jump Racing. What is your favorite type of race?
