Day 16: #15 Went the Day Well
Went the Day Well is a Proud Citizen and Tiz Maies Day colt. Trained by Graham Motion, he's got two wins in three career starts, including a convincing win in the Spiral G3 at Turfway Park.
"I was very impressed with him," Motion said. "Apart from a little greenness (in the stretch) he couldn't have been better. When Animal Kingdom won this race last year, he was very explosive, but this horse was a little explosive, too. I hate to compare the two because they are such different horses."
"The beauty of (the timing of) this race is you have the option to run him one more time or not run more time. Probably the only option (if he does run) is the Lexington Stakes (a Grade 3 at Keeneland April 21)."
"I feel confident telling you this horse will run in the Kentucky Derby," Motion continued.
The prep races over the last two weeks will likely force Went The Day Well into a final pre-Derby race. However, I like the way Graham Motion has trained this horse, not letting him compete until he was three. Jockey John Velazquez won the Kentucky Derby last year on Animal Kingdom, also trained by H. G. Motion. The odds on this one just might make him the bet of the day on May 5th!
