Kentucky Derby Contenders - Day 23: #8 Black Onyx
Contributed By Post Time PetePosted on 4/23/13 6:00 AM
Black Onyx is a Rock Hard Ten and Kalahari Cat colt. He's got three wins in five career starts, his most recent a win in the Spiral Stakes (G3). That win gave him enough points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby and he's already at Churchill Downs working out in preparation for the run.
"He really looked good," Breen said. "I wasn't looking to go too fast and we kept him off the rail so he didn't get too eager. His last quarter (of a mile) was his best quarter and that's what we wanted. Weather permitting, he'll have a blowout next Saturday."
He's fast, but his only horse against real Kentucky Derby competition was in the Spiral Stakes. He did beat Uncaptured in that race, who has ran against stronger fields. If that's any indication, he should do alright. He's not on our shortlist right now, but that could change after they announce post positions.
