Will Take Charge is a Unbridled's Song and Take Charge Lady colt trained by D. Wayne Lukas. He won the Smarty Jones in January and, after a disappointing 6th place finish in the Southwest Stakes (G3), he rebounded to win the Rebel Stakes (G2). His connections considered running him in the Grade 1 Blue Grass at Keeneland, but decided training up to the Kentucky Derby was the better route.
"We're going to train up to the Derby," Lukas said. "I just love the way he's doing and the way he's maturing. He's really, really in the zone to me. I love what I see. He's put on weight and his energy level's really increased and I like that. I would just like to go in there fresh."
He has a nice long stride, but he has yet to face some of the toughest Derby contenders. For that reason he's not currently on our short list, but that could change after the post position draw!
