Kentucky Derby Contenders - Day 3: #28 Super Ninety Nine
Contributed By Post Time PetePosted on 4/3/13 7:00 AM
Super Ninety Nine is a Pulpit and Exogenetic colt trained by Bob Baffert. His most recent race was the Rebel Stakes (G2) where he finished a disappointing fifth despite going off as the 6-5 favorite. He's a long shot pick in the Santa Anita Derby, and much longer shot at making a Run for the Roses.
It's not that he's a bad horse - he broke his maiden in his first attempt, won at Allowance race at Santa Anita the end of January, and won the Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park - three of his six starts finishing first. However, his win in the Southwest was over a sloppy track and he appears to have trouble with a fast pace.
Rafael Bejarano has committed to riding Power Broker in the Santa Anita Derby, which likely means Martin Garcia will be aboard for the ride. Also, the race is 1/16 of a mile longer than Super Ninety Nine has ever run. As always we'll be watching him and, if the track is sloppy, probably include him in a few exotics. But as of this writing he's a longshot to make the Derby and not one we're watching closely. Of course, that goes out the window with a good run on Saturday. ;-)
