Day 30: #1 Hansen
Hansen is a Tapit and Stormy Sunday colt. In 6 career starts he has 4 wins and 2 places, including wins in the Kentucky Cup Juvenile, Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and Gotham Stakes. He most recently finished second to Dullahan in the Blue Grass. However, jockey Ramon Dominguez may have put away the whip too early because he didn't see Dullahan coming. He also set a very fast pace early on which may have cost him.
"The pace was too fast. I knew in the first quarter. It was quicker than we wanted." said trainer Michael Maker. "But he was fresh today. The next one is the big one."
I'm willing to chalk up his loss in the Blue Grass to a misstep by the jockey. The Kentucky Derby field will contain 19 other horses and Hansen will need a good break to get to the lead. He's had an impressive campaign so far and it'll be between Hansen and Union Rags for the #1 favorite on May 5th.
He's too good to ignore, so there's no question I'll include him on my short list. How I bet him will depend on the odds. We should see very soon how this race shapes up so stay tuned!
