Day 5: #26 Currency Swap
Currency Swap is a High Cotton and Echo Bluff colt. He broke his maiden in his first try and won the Hopeful G1 at Saratoga. He finished second to Gemologist in a Gulfstream Park allowance race in mid-March despite going off as the favorite. We don't think this is something to get caught up on and still like Currency Swap's chances of running on May 5th.
"He was fine, nice and relaxed," trainer Teresa Pompay said [after his loss at Gulfstream]. "We just wanted him to lay off (Gemologist), and the pace was a little slow in the beginning. The other horse ran away from him a little bit, but he did everything we wanted. We got the race into him."
Currency Swap's competition will not be as stiff as the crowd running in the Wood Memorial and Santa Anita Derby this Saturday, so he will need to win the Illinois Derby soundly if he is going to hang with the best in Kentucky. We think he'll pull it off and may go off at great odds in Kentucky, so we're keeping are eyes on this one. If anything changes, we will definitely keep you posted. Look for a complete update and shortlist on May 1st here at 9thRace.com.
