With the final leg of the Triple Crown upon us, the horse racing community is preparing for the Nick Zito show this Saturday. Ice Box, the runner up in the Kentucky Derby, and Fly Down, winner of this year's Dwyer Stakes posted 6 and 5 respectively. They couldn't have posted much better although I doubt that matters much since both are strong closers. Even though Belmont has been known to decimate the best of horses, Fly Down has already proven he can handle it and we know Ice Box is a strong closer and will handle the distance so these two horses are hard to bet against.
First Dude will likely try to break as close to the front as possible, which won't be easy coming from post 11. He did manage to handle that fine in the Preakness but Belmont is a different track. Still, I'm keeping an eye on him.
The rest of the field I feel is weak in comparison, though that doesn't mean any one of them couldn't pull off an upset. I've got Drosselmeyer as a possible mid-grade longshot, but I'm still not 100% on him.
